Moore's Ford Lynching The Long Route Home: On July 25, 1946, two young black couples- Roger and Dorothy Malcom, George and Mae Murray Dorsey-were killed by a lynch mob at the Moores Ford Bridge over the Appalachee River connecting Walton and Oconee Counties (Brooks, 1). The four victims were tied up and shot hundreds of times in broad daylight by a mob of unmasked men; murder weapons included rifles, shotguns, pistols, and a machine gun. Shooting a black person was like shooting a deer, George Dorseys nephew, George Washington Dorsey said (Suggs C1). It has been over fifty years and this case is still unsolved by police investigators. It is known that there were atleast a dozen men involved in these killings. Included in the four that were known by name was Loy Harrison. Loy Harrison may not have been an obvious suspect to the investigators, but Harrison was the sole perpetrator in the unsolved Moores Ford Lynching case. The motive appeared to be hatred and the crime hurt the image of the state leaving the town in an outrage due to the injustice that left the victims in unmarked graves (Jordon,31). Many African Americans lived on farms and tended for white landowners. Bob Hester was a landowner, on this farm the Moores Ford Lynching began. On July 14, Roger Malcom followed Dorothy Malcom to Hesters farm, Roger was arguing with her. According to the original FBI report, Hunter 2 Hesters son, Barney, told Malcom to leave. As he was leaving a fight broke out between Malcom and Hester. Malcom then pulled out a knife and stabbed Hester in the chest. The reason for the argument is uncertain although at that time Barney Hester may have been having an affair with Dorothy Malcom. One of the neighbors said that the black community felt it had more to do with sex than anything else did (Suggs,C1). After the fight broke out, Barney Hester was taken to the hospital and Roger Malcom was taken to jail. On the morning before the lynchings, Harrison drove to the house of Dorothy Malcoms parents, who had begged with him to get Roger Malcom out of jail since the stabbing occurred. Harrison refused to pick him up at first, but suddenly changed his mind. Harrison took along with him Dorothy Malcom , who was pregnant at the time, and George Mae Murray Dorsey to Monroe. Their Harrison signed a $600 bond to bail Roger Malcom out of jail. Harrison, with the two black couples in his car, left the county jail at about 5:30 p.m. on July 25, 1946, and headed back along the Athens Highway toward his farm. Authorities said the route he chose was the longest way home, along a winding dirt road (Suggs,C4). According to Harrison, when he reached the bridge at Moores Ford, a car blocked his way (Rivers,1). A mob of twenty to twenty-five unmasked men stopped him at gunpoint (Suggs, C1). Then they took the two couples into the woods, tied them to the trees and shot them. They were so savagely beaten and overwhelmed with bullets that their bodies were ripped to shreds. The only way to tell the bodies apart was by their lips. Investigator Bobby Howard said. When questioning Harrison he told the local authorities and the FBI he could not identify any members of the Hunter 3 mob or explain how they knew which way he was coming home. No one was ever prosecuted for the slayings of the African Americans and why it happened is left too much conjecture (Rivers, 1). The six month investigation following the incident that came to be known as the Moores Ford lynching garnered sensational headlines that horrified the nation, but yielded nothing (Ford,1). FBI agents eventually left the county unable to break the code of silence that protected the killers. A state official was quoted as saying at the time that the countys residents were hampering the investigation by refusing to reveal what they knew (Suggs,C1). Over one hundred people were taken before a grand jury, but there was never any key evidence leading to the murderers. We read the blogs and newsletters from people who seem to be way over our heads in power, ability and talent, and too often we discount our own abilities. In mentioning the recent rash of face-to-face interviews Ive done lately (Skype and in-person), someone commented about how scary that was. As Im writing this, Im nervous about a 20-minute talk Im giving this evening to a MENSA chapter in Columbia, SC. These folks are often accomplished with pretty decent levels of intellect. Here I am, coming off 15 appearances, yet Im a bit ill-at-ease about this one. Instead of being too afraid to accept, however, I had to make fun and remind myself, as Will Smith said in the movie Men in Black, First off, you chose me, so you recognize the skills In another situation, where I taught about entering contests and recognizing the scams, half the readers seemed afraid if not angry about contests, believing they were all scams. One guy was sure that if a contest charged a fee, they were opportunists at our expense. I reminded him that all publishers were in the business to make a buck, and all of them charged: some in advance, some after sales.In traditional or self-publishing circles, the publishers arent all that charitable, doing what they do for the sake of God or humanity. Plus contests are such opportunities. And on Facebook, someone fussed about editors and how they are evil minions intent on changing our stories to their own. He was concerned that editors would overstep their bounds and rewrite the content, not just make corrections. I reminded him that writers pick and choose whats edited. Even with traditional publishers that want manuscripts changed before agreeing to publish, you can negotiate. I did. The underlying theme in all of these concerns and complaints is that of fear. Fear someone will make fun. Fear someone will steal our work or our money. Fear someone will take advantage of our deep-seeded, emotional urge to publish. Were pouring our souls into print, and the last thing we need in the midst of our trepidation is someone who also robs us of money,rights or self-esteem. Do . . . it . . . once. Do an interview in person. Speak to a small group. Enter a contest. Let an editor lay hands on your work. Whats the worst that can happen? The interview goes badly? The host wants a good interview more than you do, trust me. The speech goes awry? You learn from it. The audience got no satisfaction from your trip-up. They were up their with you. So you lose the contest. So the editor doesnt like your writing. You decide if you walk away unscathed. Not them.

Wackenhut SS It was a warm spring day. I turned down the radio as I drove across the bridge at Hoover dam, water and cement connected the state line separating Arizona from Nevada. Crossing the dam then past the tourist information center reached two huge stone angel monuments with arms and wings stretched toward the sky. The sight of them invoked religious desperation from me as if a I was lacking from divine intervention. Parked on either side of the two towering angels sat two highway patrol cars. One on each side of the statues like vultures ordered by the sherif of Nottingham to victimize taxpayers. I felt desperate and uneasy as I stared into the troopers eyes as I passed by and they stared back. I am not paranoid but that doesn't mean they are not after me. Everyone is a suspect and victim for harassment and possible revenue. My sense of privacy dissolved with the irreverent mix. Psychically connected and hoping to break the troopers attention, I turned up Black Sabbath on the radio and sa ng along. "They tell you black is really white, the moon is just the sun at night and when you walk through golden halls, you get to keep the gold that falls, it's heaven and hell." The patrol cars stay put as I wind up the mountain road out of sight. I keep the heavy metal tunes blaring to give me that extra boost of primal fire that leads one to believe that enough vrihl energy omnisciently moves away adversaries. My attention shot through their hollow headslike a laser out of the screaming skulls of hell. Aggressive aesthetic attention, makes things move quicker with a lottery of victims. I drop my vigil as I drive through Henderson Nevada. From the clouds, mountains and small skyscrapers, the twilight cast a weird silhouette around the city. I felt safe, as if the ratio of civilians had the police outnumbered. I turn off the radio to sense the silence that Lake Mead evoked in the sunset. Winding up the highway, the sky pulled like a magnet, my hair stood on end, the roof of the car like static electricity. I head north-west towards Vegas into the orange twilight. I light a joint and savor the powerful ringing in my ears as I focus my attention on the electric silence, invisibly driving me into Las Vegas.

Break Before University Essay

It goes without saying that people like having the things they don’t have. Students always want to have a break after a long time they were very busy with studying, especially before they come to universities – a new environment with lots of challenging. It’ll be not good for a student to have a year break before going to university because it’s really a waste of time, and they might forget their knowledge. Today, both of adults and children always try to learn hard. Knowledge is unlimited; we never have everything in our mind. We learn bit by bit every day. If one stops working for one day, one eventually loses his knowledge. For one year, people can learn a lot of knowledge and experience, and you’ll be worse than others. Secondly, if you have a break for one year, it will take you more than one year to come back your work. In some case, the inertia is so great that one can’t go back to school.  Last but not least, one might forget your lessons easily when one doesn’t practice. When one comes to a university, one’ll continue learning your program in high school in a different way. One’ll have to learn by himself more than following teachers. It takes a lot of times to learn this new habit. Taking a long break seems like a cool idea, but I will not jeopardize my college education. A student will have to coup with many problems after such a break. One should consult his teachers and his parents before making that decision.
